History
The Methodist Church was founded in the Fall of 1878. Services were held in homes, a store building, the new school where Anthony Elementary now stands, and the old Courthouse. The First Methodist Episcopal Church was chartered on March 15, 1879 with a charter membership of sixteen people.
The first church was built on the present site in 1882. With the need for more room, the current building was completed in 1909 at a cost of over $30,000. This included an Andrew Carnegie pipe organ which cost $2500. Carnegie donated $1000 for this organ. The 11 rank organ was modernized and electrified in 1956.
The Fellowship Hall and Educational building was added including the Ruth Hoath Chapel and the church offices. This addition was dedicated on February 14, 1965.
In 1985 the sanctuary was remodeled with a new coat of paint, wiring, lighting, and sound system. New carpeting and upholstery for the pews was added in 1998. In 2022, the roof was replaced, the sanctuary and adjoining rooms were remodeled, and new flooring added to the entryways and Fellowship Hall. Historic features like a fireplace and stairway were uncovered and refurbished.
A parsonage was built in 1924. It was moved and replaced with a parking lot when the current parsonage at 1102 N Anthony was purchased in 2005.
Little Lambs DayCare home was purchased in 2012 and Hoath Chapel was remodeled for Little Lions Academy in 2014.
The Anthony United Methodist Church continues to grow and change to meet the needs of the members and the community.
